American Flamingos, Black Skimmers
Ria Lagartos Sanctuary. Yes, Ría, not Río. The town is Río and the Spaniards, who had no experience with estuaries, named the water feature Ría because it wasn't exactly a river but was something like one. The sanctuary exists primarily because of Alex Dzib our guide. He showed us stupendous drone video of the nursery being threatened by a crocodile and how the adults herded the young to safety and diverted the croc to themselves who could escape. In 2017(?), the entire colony of 21,000 nests failed because of three (3) feral dogs. The sanctuary personnel got federal permission to kill the dogs. In 2018 20,000 nests were reestablished and successful.
