Washington -- American Goldfinch
#3 Near Winthrop, WA, on a Los Alamos Mountaineers trip, July, 2014. This is the third state, well after I'd conceived of the project in Hawaii. The Mountaineers were in the EcoLodge in Mazama, WA. It's a beautiful place where a person can watch birds all day or hit one of the trails. You should go into the sports store in Mazama. This day they all went uphill, but to find the goldfinch I knew I'd have to go the other way to some agricultural lands. Jan Studebaker and Marilyn were with me, both feeling that a break from hard hiking would be beneficial. We were cruising the paved farm roads where it wasn't long before a person could photograph the AMGO just about anywhere. Still, the birds aren't waving hello with their wings. You've got to hunt them, and I do mean hunt -- be stealthy, hidden, prepared, and fast.
