Alaska's Willow Ptarmigan
#33 on the tour. On the Highway north of Nome a few miles past Salmon Lake Recreation area on our way to find (but we missed them) the bristle-thighed curlews. I was told to relax about the ptarmigan because we'd see many of these tame and abundant birds. That turned out to be false. We saw exactly two of them in three weeks, and it was quite a negotiation to stop the van and get me to an open door so I could grab a photo. My Alaska birding gallery contains a photo essay of the trip.
