Louisiana'a Brown Pelican
#29 on the list. I missed it on the first pass because of bad weather and the fact that you can't actually find the coast in most of Louisiana. I got to the ferry between Cameron and Holly Beach. After the 10-minute ferry ride about six of the birds flew right over. The ferry costs one ($1) dollar. They cannot accommodate trailers.
The Louisiana coast changes immediately at the western terminus of the ferry. That's the edge of the Mississippi delta and the sandy beaches and barrier islands begin. Suddenly the coast isn't some fuzzy zone but an actual line. Typical of transition or edge habitats, this one was rich in birds, particularly the BRPE. I must make an extended trip through that area. Tent camping will be tough but I think it will work.
